6th Annual Mopar Invasion

Mopar muscle was alive and well at the 6th Annual Mopar Invasion held at GET this past weekend. Hosted by South Bay Mopars and Chrysler Performance West, we had over 60 collectible cars participate. We had everything from classic Challengers, Chargers, Plymouth Barracuda, Plymouth Prowlers, and a Chrysler New Yorker to newer Challengers and PT Cruisers.

We enjoyed a BBQ, music, raffles, prizes for best show car, dealers choice and more! It was nice to see the passion these enthusiasts have for their cars.

We hope everyone enjoyed this event, and we look forward to holding it again next year.

The off-roading experts at Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine have awarded the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon their top honor: "4x4 of the Year." Powering the legendary Wrangler to the title was its new Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine that transforms the Wrangler's driving experience on-road, while giving the most-capable production off-road vehicle in the world even more off-road mastery.

"The Rubicon gives you complete confidence in its terrain tackling abilities. It allows you to take the trail less traveled without worrying about the journey. Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road's "4x4 of the Year" competition included a thousand miles of trails, where editors evaluated suspensions, drivetrains, transfer case functionality, and off-road performance – on sand, mud, dirt and rock – as well as styling and value. They tested everything from how well a vehicle climbs up a rock to how fast it can drive across the desert, and every scenario in between.

This latest honor from Petersen's 4-Wheel and Off-Road magazine is the third award for the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler in the last week. Last week, the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) named Jeep Wrangler Unlimited the "Mid-Size SUV of Texas," while a panel of journalists and professional athletes awarded it the "Best Off-Road Value" in the 2012 Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year competition.

Jeep Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – becomes even more capable both on- and off-road for 2012, courtesy of an all-new, more fuel efficient and more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine, and a new five-speed automatic transmission – both of which it shares with the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler Group's 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine – winner of the prestigious Ward's 10 Best Engines award – delivers 285 horsepower (209 kW) and 260 (353 Nm) lb.-ft. of torque, while delivering up to 21 miles per gallon highway in the 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The improvement, when compared to the previous 3.8-liter V-6 engine, is 40 percent in horsepower and 10 percent in torque.

Additionally, for refined shifting and greater performance, the Jeep Wrangler migrates from a four-speed to a new five-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Jeep Wrangler also features the company's first application of a manual transmission to the Pentastar V-6.

Jeep continues to refine the successful Wrangler formula by combining legendary, benchmark capability with an interior that delivers rich styling with significantly upgraded touch surfaces, occupant comfort and versatility, and a premium appearance courtesy of a body color hard top for the popular Sahara and Rubicon models.

2012 Jeep Wrangler interior highlights include a recently redesigned instrument panel and storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. A lockable console and upgraded door armrest areas boast comfortable touch points, while a redesigned center stack is easier to reach and operate. Heated, power mirrors are available, and drivers and passengers enjoy enhanced visibility courtesy of large rear windows.

From the moment I saw the new styling of the Jeep Grand Cherokee I wanted one. When it was time for me to trade in my 2009 Dodge Journey I went for my new love, the 2011 Grand Cherokee. I have mentioned before how much I loved the Dodge Journey. It is so functional, spacious, and kid friendly. I was slightly nervous to make the change – wondering if my new ride would be as great – and it has not disappointed!

My absolute favorite feature in my Grand Cherokee is how I can turn on the ipod app from my iphone and it automatically connects to the uConnect in the car and plays through the sound system. No cords or hassle – it just happens automatically!I also love the new color sensored back up camera. Not only does it show you what is behind you, but it is also color coded to tell you how close you are to objects and beeps to warn you if you get a little too close for comfort.I have two small kids in car seats and my husband was hesitant as to how the car seats would fit in this smaller SUV, but they fit perfectly fine. The back seat is very roomy and I can still fit one more passenger comfortably, even with two huge car seats back there.I will admit that I miss all the hidden, under compartment storage of the Dodge Journey; however my Cherokee makes up for that with the storage in the rear. The back storage space is big. I keep a large double stroller back there and have never had a problem with space, even on big trips to Costco! I am able to store some necessary smaller items in the under compartment in the back where the spare tire is kept.Just like with my previous car, I love the radio system. The touch screen is so simple and easy to use. The steering wheel controls are perfect for navigating the traffic of Southern California. I love not having to take my eyes off the road to change the radio station, volume, etc.This new Grand Cherokee is function and style all in one! If you are in the market for a new SUV, you owe it to yourself to look into the 2011 Grand Cherokee. It will not disappoint you!

Big Bear (Cactus Flats)

We had two great runs on Saturday, June 11, 2011. The Black Diamond Trail went down Horse Thief Canyon. There were 15 Jeeps on the run and everyone enjoyed the challenge of the trail along with the commentary given by Critter, their trail guide. The other group of 16 went to Tip-Top Mountain. The ride was not as rough as the Black Diamond Trail but the view was spectacular from the top. There were no mishaps on the trails (small scratches don't count), weather was great, the company was even better, you couldn't ask for a better day!

For those of you who took pictures don't forget to send them to us so everyone can enjoy them. It was a great way to spend a Saturday and we are looking forward to our next adventure on October 1, 2011.

Danny Castillo

Danny Castillo has worked at Glenn E. Thomas on our internet team for three months. This is his second time working for GET. Danny left GET to work for other dealerships – but decided to come back because he likes the honesty and integrity of GET.

Outside of work Danny enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. They enjoy watching movies and spending quality time together.

Danny’s favorite thing about GET is the management and integrity of the dealership. He likes working somewhere where they are not out to get their customers. He appreciates the good, comfortable environment. He likes that Glenn E. Thomas Dodge Chrysler Jeep is not your typical dealership. Danny says his biggest accomplishment was joining the Internet Sales Team and becoming one of the top sales consultants. He enjoys coming to work each day and selling cars!

Rafael Reynoso

Rafael Reynoso has worked at Glenn E. Thomas Company for 15 years. His first 10 years were spent installing alarms and working as a porter. The last 5 years he has been working in sales. Ralph, as he is known around the dealership, is a great salesman and has won many sales competitions including 2 trips to Hawaii and most recently a cruise to Mexico!

Outside of work Ralph enjoys hiking, fishing, and spending time with his family. He has 3 children, 2 of which also work at GET and drive Chryslers!

His favorite thing about working at GET is the Davis family. He sees them as family and not as an employer/employee relationship. He really enjoys them and attributes that to why he has stayed working here for so many years.

He most enjoys helping people get into the car they want, giving them a good deal, and seeing them happy.

Poun Son

Poun Son has worked at Glenn E. Thomas Company for 26 years! He started out prepping new cars to go on the lot and then moved into the Service Department where he is now a Service Technician.

When he is not working, Poun enjoys being outdoors. He enjoys camping and fishing with his four children.

He loves making customers happy and believes customer satisfaction is #1. He loves getting thank you notes for staying late – sometimes he even stays open until 9pm.
His most memorable moments at GET were at the Monte Davis golf tournaments. He enjoyed being able to socialize with everyone outside of the work environment. He hopes we can do more Monte Davis tournaments soon!

When asked what has kept him at Glenn E. Thomas Company all these years he said how he loves the family atmosphere of the dealership. He loves seeing the same people and faces each day at work and enjoys getting to know them better each day. He feels that GET is his second family and he really loves that close feel of the dealership.

To finish off 2010 strong, we had a sales competition in the month of December. We are pleased to announce that we met our goal and want to thank our entire sales staff for all of their hard work and efforts throughout the holiday season.

Our first place winner is Rafael Reynoso, who won a weeklong trip for two to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Our Second through Fourth Place winners are Steve Henderson, Mark Myers, and Kurt Oldenburg. They all won a weekend getaway for two to Las Vegas, San Francisco, or San Diego!

Chrysler Group's Dodge Durango was a big, truck-based SUV, discontinued in 2008 when the market for such vehicles fell to pieces, as Chrysler itself was doing then, too.
Now, in what Chrysler would hope is a metaphor for the company, Durango's back, transformed and stunningly good.

It's bigger than its predecessor but drives smaller, thanks to new steering in the V-6 version and careful attention to weight balance.

It's hardly cheap, but the price range of roughly $30,000 to $50,000 is quite reasonable by today's standards for the size, features and capabilities.

Its standard Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 seemed powerful enough to make the optional Hemi 5.7-liter V-8, and its greater fuel thirst, unnecessary for most people, most of the time.

And, joy, the five-speed automatic transmission shifted with crisp, quick precision in all conditions.

Our test vehicle was a rear-wheel-drive V-6, and it enjoyed the benefits of lighter weight and better weight balance than the V-8 and all-wheel-drive models have. It was easy and pleasant to sling it through the corners and abrupt turns.

Durango's now a crossover — which means it's built using the unibody construction common to cars, rather than the body-atop-a-frame style of the previous Durango. In fact, it's a stretched version of the undercarriage used on Chrysler's latest Jeep Grand Cherokee, a pleasant-driving machine.

Crossovers usually weigh less than truck-style vehicles, so they get the same performance using smaller, more fuel-stingy engines. They also tend to ride more comfortably and handle more nimbly.

Engineers worked hard to keep the weight balance close to the ideal 50-50 front to rear. At worst, Durango has 52% of its weight on the front wheels.

For context, a typical front-drive sedan has about 60% of its weight in front, which is why the steering sometimes feels heavy and unresponsive.

One trade-off: To help with the weight balance, Durango's heavy battery is under the front passenger's floor. There are contacts under the hood for jump-starting, but to remove and replace the battery, you wrangle it through a floor access panel.

Durango had a remarkably tight turning circle, about the same as a midsize sedan. So not only did it feel nimble on the road, it could be swung about in town without the usual back-and-forth drill to grab a parking spot on the other side of the street.

Another delightful surprise: The optional navigation system is a Garmin unit as easy to use as the accessory units by Garmin, TomTom and others many people use in otherwise navi-less cars. And it's several hundred dollars, not a couple thousand.

What else was impressive:

•Performance. The V-6 was more than sufficient with three aboard and a few bags. If you tow or haul a lot, especially where it's hilly, you still might prefer the optional Hemi V-8, though.

• Interior. A sore point about Chrysler Group models in the past, it was a high-class cabin in the midlevel Durango Crew tester. Soft-touch materials, controls that were pleasant to operate, gauges you could quickly read.

•Styling. Had a hint of the "slammed" look of the discontinued Dodge Magnum wagon.

There's an aversion to wagons in the U.S., but not here. We think wagons are the auto equivalent of comfort food. They look right and are practical.

Durango still has the hunky stance of an SUV, but the hint of the Magnum wagon is a plus.

•Comfort. Seats — inconsistent in past products — felt quite accommodating. Second-row legroom was enough for your teen basketball player. The third row was mainly for kids, but easy enough to reach because the second-row fold-and-slide mechanism was easy to work.

Gripes?

Like most vehicles, Durango needs a better sun visor system. Sun-blindness was a big issue as we drove the winding roads along and near the Pacific Coast. Swinging the visor from front to side to front while driving can be a dangerous distraction.

You could say the same about most cars today.

Max cargo space is less than rivals'. The Chevy Traverse, for one, has more than 100 cubic feet with second and third rows down. Durango, about 85.

Overall, though, the 2011 Durango was a stylish, satisfying, sporty machine that would be high on our shopping list.

ABOUT THE 2011 DODGE DURANGO

•What? Full-size, seven-passenger, three-row, four-door crossover SUV, available with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), in four trim levels.

•When? On sale in December.

•Where? Made in Detroit.

•Why? Still a market for big SUVs.

•How? Put different body, interior on a stretched Jeep Grand Cherokee chassis; share engines to cut costs.

•How much? Express starts at $30,045, including $850 shipping. Crew, $34,045. CrewLux, $39,045. Citadel, $42,795. Four-wheel-drive models are $2,000 more.

•How powerful? 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 rated 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm, 260 pounds-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm. 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 rated 360 hp at 5,150 rpm, 390 lbs.-ft. at 4,250 rpm. Both use five-speed automatic.

•How big? A few inches shorter, narrower than rival Chevrolet Traverse. Durango is 199.8 inches long, 75.8 in. wide, on a 119.8-in. wheelbase.

Cargo: 17.2 cubic feet behind third row; 47.7 cu. ft. behind second row; 84.5 cu. ft. behind first row with second and third rows folded. Weighs 4,756 to 5,397 lbs. Carries 1,280 to 1,430 lbs. Tows 6,200 to 7,400 lbs. Turning-circle diameter, 37.1 ft.

•How thirsty? V-6 rated 16 miles per gallon in town, 22 (AWD) or 23 (RWD) highway, 18 (AWD) or 19 (RWD) combined. V-8 rated 13 (AWD) or 14 (RWD) in town, 20 highway, 15 (AWD) or 16 (RWD) combined.

Trip computer in rear-drive V-6 test vehicle showed 19.8 mpg (5.05 gallons per 100 miles) in brisk driving on winding two-lane roads. Regular specified for V-6. Midgrade recommended for V-8. Holds 24.6 gallons.

•Overall: Smooth, agile, handsome.

The “Letters for Lyrics” program, a partnership between the Ram Truck brand and Zac Brown Band, aims to collect 1 million letters to send to U.S. troops deployed around the world. Locally, Glenn E. Thomas Dodge Chrysler Jeep is collecting letters at the dealership (2100 E Spring Street, Signal Hill, CA 90755) and giving each letter writer a “Breaking Southern Ground” CD.

“This program is a great way to say ‘thank you’ to our courageous men and women in uniform,” said John Davis, General Manager at G.E.T. “We are excited to offer this program for our community to show its support to the troops.”

The CD features three all-new songs from Zac Brown Band, and music from Sonia Leigh, Nic Cowan and Levi Lowrey. The compilation CD is not sold in stores and is exclusively available at Ram Truck dealerships.

Soldiers’ Angels, a nonprofit organization, will deliver the letters on behalf of Zac Brown Band and the Ram Truck brand. Soldiers’ Angels is a volunteer-led organization with over 225,000 members providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, along with veterans and their families.

As part of the initiative, several short documentary-style videos are being posted on RamTrucks.com with highlights from the Zac Brown Band’s recent trip to the Persian Gulf to perform for the troops.

John Harris has been working at Glenn E Thomas Company for 40 years! He began washing cars and mopping floors. His dad was a mechanic and knew the service advisor at GET. He put in a good word for his son and he landed the job!

John has worked as a mechanic, held almost every position in the parts department, has been service shop dispatcher, and eventually became a service writer in 1984. We are also lucky to have John's son working as a technician and his father-in-law working as a driver.

John enjoys hearing positive feedback from our customers. He appreciates when customers send a positive letter about the service department's hard work. He says it is nice to hear about the great experiences people have here. His favorite thing about working at Glenn E Thomas Company is the employees and how everyone gets along. He enjoys the family atmosphere.

John says his co-workers and the GET owners are what have kept him here all of these years. He enjoys coming to work every day.

John's hobbies include sports and drag racing. He has been married for 30 years and is excited to become a Grandpa next month!

A Look Inside the Moab Jeep Safari

When somebody mentions the Moab Jeep Safari, I instantly think of three things: noise, crazy off-roading, and fun memories.

Moab, Utah is a mecca for off-road enthusiasts and every year at the Annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari the streets rumble with noise as Utah's Red Rock country is invaded with 4x4 vehicles. The site is truly indescribable and must be seen to believe. Although it is called the 'Jeep Safari,' and you will see more Jeeps than anything else, ultimately four-wheel drive is the only qualifier. Every make, model and knock-off can be found here.
The amazing thing about this event is that it attracts people of all types from all over the world. Families, hard-core enthusiasts and people just looking for a good time head to this beautiful terrain called Moab. The Moab Jeep Safari offers more than 50 off-road trails to challenge not only your off-road skills, but also your vehicle. I have had the opportunity to attend this event a few times. What a sight to see! Most of the Jeeps here are modified, but some are just bone stock, or as my brother-in-law calls them, Cheerleader Jeeps, claiming that they are just all for looks.The trails are rated from 1-5, easy to difficult. Some of these trails are absolutely crazy! I am lucky to have an old friend, Calvin, who attends the event annually to give me some close up photos of the 2010 Jeep Safari. Calvin has been working on vehicles since Jr. High. He is truly 'The Man' at the Jeep Safari.

Calvin has custom built his Jeep himself. It is a 1978 CJ-7 with 1ton axles, a custom 4 link rear suspension, and a custom 3 link front suspension with fox coilovers and full hydraulic steering. His wheelbase has been extended to 117 inches for steep climbs and shooting up waterfalls. And it rides on 38.5" tall super swamper tires!

The Moab trails cover some of the most rugged and scenic country you can find. Forest, desert, steep canyon walls and rims, rivers, mountains, and the famous Moab "slick rock" provide for variety and fascinating beauty.

During my visits to Moab, I have seen some of the most incredible and insane things. I distinctly remember one obstacle called 'Potato Salad Hill'. Vehicle after vehicle would attempt to make it up 'Potato Salad Hill' with no luck. Vehicles continually roll off or slide off (except the Dodge Trucks and Jeeps, of course...) yet a line of vehicles still form for more enthusiasts to attempt to beat the challenge. When a vehicle actually successfully made it up the hill, what a thrill to see! If you enjoy off-roading, the Moab Jeep Safari should be added to your list of 'Things of Do'.

FRANK AGUILAR

We are so lucky to have Frank as part of our Service Team. He has been with Glenn E Thomas Company since 1969. His father was our automotive painter and when they needed an extra hand, Frank was hired as his assistant. After one year he moved to the parts department and climbed the ladder to become the Parts Manager. He eventually moved into our Service Department and now works as a Service Advisor.

Frank has been married 36 years and has one daughter. He is very proud of his daughter and how she radiates a positive attitude of joy to everyone around her. She is currently studying English Literature and Creative Writing at Chapman University. Frank enjoys spending time with his family and house boating at Lake Shasta.

Frank says our President, Bob Davis and the late Monte Davis are the reason he has stayed at Glenn E Thomas all these years. He states, “They are a major part of my life.”

When asked about his most memorable moment working at GET, he said, “There are so many.” He went on to say he most enjoys the lasting relationships he has built over the years with his customers and with his fellow employees. He enjoys staying up to date on lives of those he has met through the years.

This new system augments the head restraints ability to minimize neck injuries caused by rear-impact accidents. In the event of a rear impact, the head restraints deploy to remove the space between the occupants head and the restraint to help minimize whiplash type injuries.

According to the annual resale value analysis, new 2010 Jeep brand vehicles will maintain 35.7 percent of their original value after five years of ownership – more than 3 percent above the industry average.

Preventative Care is Key Step for Healthy Vehicles

Tough economic times might tempt vehicle owners to delay seemingly minor service and repairs. But saving a few dollars today can be very costly in the long run.

Sometimes a customer is skeptical about the urgency of a recommended repair, Yet, several affordable services are key to maintaining vehicle safety, efficiency and performance while preventing costly repairs down the road.

Service advisors at Glenn E. Thomas Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Signal Hill, California cite a recent report by U.S. News and World Report on “6 Car Repairs You Can’t Afford to Skip” as an important list for helping vehicle owners prioritize the maintenance needs of their vehicles.

The magazine identifies worn brake pads, oil changes, air filters, transmission fluid leaks, burned out lights and clogged fuel filters as six important vehicle care items that should not be postponed.

For example, replacing a dirty air filter can cost very little. But if a dirty air filter prevents the engine from getting enough air, spark plugs can fail. Replacing the spark plugs is a significantly more expensive repair.

In addition to having your vehicle inspected by a factory-trained service technician, there are several simple steps owners can take to prepare their vehicle for fall and winter.

Check tire pressure: Tire pressure can fluctuate with temperature changes. If the vehicle is not equipped with a tire-pressure monitoring system, check on or near the driver’s-side door for the correct pressure. Properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent

Inspect wiper blades: Streaking, limited visibility, blade tearing or noisy wiper blade operation are the tell-tale signs that wipers need replacing

Pack an emergency kit: Drivers can prepare their own or purchase a safety kit from Mopar® that includes a safety flashlight, fleece blanket, six-gauge jumper cables, safety triangle, screwdrivers, pliers, two bungee cords and gloves.

Drivers should always check their owner’s manual for complete information on service and maintenance schedules.

Dealership still hits home runs at 100

It was 1927, the year the astonishing George Herman Ruth would hit his record 60 home runs.
Before the season began, however, word leaked out that the New York Yankees, including the Babe and first baseman Lou Gehrig, soon to become known as baseball's "Iron Horse," were to visit Long Beach to play an exhibition game.

This was an astonishing event, and in an automobile showroom on Anaheim Street, entrepreneur Glenn E. Thomas wondered how to make the most of it. His plan, when he came up with one, was simple but effective. Ruth and Gehrig were hunters. So was Thomas. He invited them to join him at a local hunting club, figuring they couldn't resist. They didn't.

A photo was taken on the great day; Ruth and Gehrig in hunting attire with the somewhat diminutive Thomas standing between them. Since magnified about a zillion times, it covers a wall of the Glenn E. Thomas showroom, which in 1990 moved to 2100 E. Spring St. The photo is too big to miss. On my first visit to the showroom, early in 1980, the first person I saw was Babe Ruth

The Ruth-Gehrig photo was a small step in a business story that began in 1909 when Glenn's father, Walter, founded the Long Beach Auto Co. on Pacific Avenue. Now 100 years old and renamed Glenn E. Thomas, the company is believed to be the oldest car dealership in Long Beach.

The first cars sold by the dealership were made by E.M.F., a company that merged with Studebaker in 1911. Glenn Thomas soon purchased the Long Beach Auto Co. from his father. In 1934, he entered a franchise agreement with the Chrysler Corp. and became a Dodge dealership.
Wild-goose chase

Rising from the Great Salt Lake, the Bear River flows 350 miles through Idaho and Wyoming, then back into Utah. It is a popular locale for hunters, and in 1944 Glenn Thomas, still an avid hunter, tried his luck there.

World War II was coming to an end by then, and Thomas hired J. Lamont Davis, a young local man home on leave as a Navy fighter pilot, to be his guide. Davis' son, Bob, tells what happened.

"A goose was wounded, and my dad chased it for about a mile to retrieve it." Thomas was bowled over. "`If you have that kind of determination,"' he told Davis, "there is a place for you in my car dealership. Dad came down the following year and started in the parts department."

Monte, as Davis was known, brought with him his bride, Alene. As Thomas had predicted, Davis found a place in the dealership. In 1968, after serving as general manager, Monte became sole owner of Glenn Thomas Dodge, now the third-largest Dodge dealership in California.

Generation gave way to generation. In 1992, the dealership moved to its present facility in Signal Hill, near the 405 Freeway. Bob had considered a career as a sports broadcaster after graduating from Brigham Young University, but found he spoke too slowly to describe the lightning pace of sports announcing.

"I had always been involved with the dealership since working on the wash rack when I was 12." He began working more significant hours after turning 16, learning the business from his father, who died two years ago at age 83.

"He taught me four things that really stuck," says Bob. "First, treat people, including employees, as you would like to be treated. Second, cash is king. Third, there is always someone or something that will lead an assault on your capital, so protect it. This advice really helped during the recent economic crisis."

And "in good times," Monte had said, "one dealership is enough; in bad times, two is too many." Says Bob, "That really hit home in 2008-2009." Instead of expanding, they crossed their fingers to exorcise the economic dragon breathing down their necks.

Looking up

In mid-year, things took an upturn. Glenn Thomas acquired the Chrysler-Jeep franchise, and Chrysler announced an alliance with Italian carmaker Fiat. And President Barack Obama launched the Cash for Clunkers program, which, says Bob, prompted a significant boost in dealership visits. He expects Fiats to be on display soon at the Signal Hill facility.

At age 58, and despite recent setbacks, Bob Davis seems pleased by his 100-year-old dealership's prospects for the future. Two of the reasons are his sons, Brad and John, who "are currently working with us and doing well."

Bob has two married sisters, Susan and Nancy. Both are Dodge fans, but have shown no inclination to get into the auto business. (Bob drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee.)

He also has a not-so-silent partner, Alene Davis, the bride who more than 60 years ago accompanied her husband, Monte, from Utah to Long Beach.

"My mother never worked here, but her contributions to my Dad's career are immeasurable. She was a great sounding board for him as he dealt with the daily challenges of business, and also possessed a sharp business mind and helped him with his business plan.

"When she first came to Long Beach, she worked for a bank. She has always a been really good with numbers and handled their personal finances as well as recommendations for our business. She still reviews our ads in the newspaper and loves to keep me abreast on what other dealers are doing."

In this age of bankruptcies and other business failures, the Davis family has thrived on old-fashioned values, and bit of help from a wounded goose.

The Long Beach Auto Company was founded in 1909 by Walter L. Thomas on Pacific Avenue. His son, Glenn E., became very active in the company and eventually purchased the dealership. The name was changed to Glenn E. Thomas Company, and in 1921 the company moved to a new facility in Long Beach on Anaheim Street near Long Beach Blvd. Two of its most famous guests visited shortly after its opening. One was soon to set a major league record that would stand for years, hitting 60 home runs in a single season. He brought his first baseman with him. Glenn heard the Yankees were coming to town to play in an exhibition game and had extended an invitation to Babe Ruth to be his guest at his favorite duck-hunting club. The picture of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Glenn E. Thomas still adorns our showroom wall today.

In 1934 Mr. Thomas entered into a franchise agreement with Chrysler and Glenn E. Thomas Company became a Dodge dealership.

1944 brought the paths of a young Navy fighter pilot, Monte Davis, and Mr. Thomas together. Mr. Thomas was duck hunting at the Bear River Duck Club in Brigham City, Utah. Monte served as Mr. Thomas’s guide while he was home on leave, and a bond between the two men developed. He knew he would be good in business and offered him a job at his car dealership when the war ended.

Monte and his bride moved to Long Beach in 1945. He began his automotive career with Mr. Thomas, starting in the parts department and eventually working his way up to General Manager of the Dealership.

Monte Davis became the sole owner of the company in 1968. Monte became very active in the auto industry, being awarded the Time Magazine Quality Award and was finalist for the Time Magazine Dealer of the Year Award. Monte was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1996. He served as president of both the Motor Car Dealers Association of California and the Long Beach Auto Dealers Association as well as on Chrysler’s Presidents Council and was chairman of the National Dodge Dealer Council.

Monte’s son Robert joined him in the car business in 1973, and was quickly recognized by Chrysler for selling more vehicles than any other Dodge salesman in the United States in 1976.

Chrysler introduced the “Five Star Award” in 1984. Glenn E. Thomas Co. was one of five dealerships to earn the “Five Star” Award in Southern California. The award is based on scores in six different categories: facility, employee, training, processes, sales volume and customer surveys. Glenn E. Thomas Company is one of three dealerships in the world to earn this award every year since 1984.

Early in 1990, Glenn E. Thomas Company opened a new multi-million dollar facility in Signal Hill near the 405 Freeway. At this same time Bob Davis took over the reins as President, while Monte served as Chairman. Bob followed his father in serving the automotive industry and community. Bob is a past President of the Southland Motor Car Dealers Association. He was on the National Sales Council for Dodge and served as the National President for two years. He was nominated as Time Magazine’s Dealer of the Year in 1998.

In 2000, Glenn E. Thomas Co. received the “Top Dealer Award” from Chrysler’s Zone Manager. In presenting the award, Glenn E. Thomas Co. was called, “the flagship of all Dodge dealerships”.

Today, Monte's son and grandsons, John and Brad Davis, continue to do business the way they were taught by the patriarch of the family.

The LX Festival is on Saturday, March 28th. This is for all Magnum, Charger, and Challenger owners. The festival begins at 10am in Irvine at 8012 Gateway Blvd. Irvine, CA 92618. This is a festival to show off your awesome car and to meet with other Dodge owners. Representatives from Dodge will be there to answer questions and talk to you about your car. Dodge will have display cars for you to check out. This is a fun event! Be sure to email us your photos of the event!

AUDRINA PATRIDGE:

A hard days work for Brad and Victor includes delivering a car to Audrina Patridge, star of MTV's hit reality show 'The Hills'.

Brad and Victor arrived a few minutes early and were able to meet a few of Audrina's family members before she arrived (she had been filming an episode of The Hills til 3 a.m.).
